Teeth Brushing 101
Brushing your puppies teeth may seem unnecessary, but it is vital for you to start as soon as possible to get your puppy used to having his teeth brush when he is older. It will help him to be tolerant of this.
Why do you need to brush your dogs teeth? It is just as important to brush your dogs teeth as you would your own. It will of course prevent bad breath and gum disease. As a dogs ages to about 3 years of age their teeth will start to pit and form a build up of tartar.
Here’s a quick step by step guide to help guide you through:
Massage the OUTSIDE of your puppies mouth with your fingers palm side down pointed upwards on the muzzle. Mimic the brushing motion. Do not put your fingers in the moth as yet. Reward with lots of praise. You can also reinforce the praise with a treat or two.
Once your puppy is comfortable with this and only then attempt this next stage, use your fingers to gently massage the gums inside the mouth, use the same brushing motion. Reward with lots of praise. You can also reinforce the praise with a treat or two.
You can now use a little toothpaste on your finger and let puppy lick it off.
Once your puppy is comfortable with you putting your fingers in his mouth can you begin to introduce the brush. When introducing the brush, do not just lift the lips and put the brush in. Be calm and gentle. Let your puppy sniff the brush before. when he is happy and comfortable, reward with lots of praise. You can also reinforce the praise with a treat or two.
At this point your puppy should now be comfortable with the brush, you can add the toothpaste now and again let him sniff it first, he will probably want to lick it off once again. Reward with lots of praise. You can also reinforce the praise with a treat or two.
It should not take too long to master this. Just remember to always brush your puppies teeth gently and in a similar way using gentle circular motions as you would your own teeth.
